Apt 33 RESIDENTIAL  #2203  2024

Apartment 33 is a 6,000 square foot two story apartment located on the upper east side of Manhattan. The design team was tasked with updating the existing apartment’s dated contemporary style to something with a more timeless and refined aesthetic. Along with this upgrade, the owner, a chef and cookbook author had strong directions for not only how the kitchen would look and feel, but also function. A family of six who enjoys entertaining, the design provides formal living and dining spaces, with separate children’s play spaces on the second floor.

The challenge in designing the apartment lay in the history of the unit's previous renovations. As a prewar unit that has seen large additions, and been combined from one unit to two, the interior layout of the apartment had a very pieced together feel. Walls jogged, columns cut through the middle of spaces, and ceiling heights varied throughout. The layout of the design of Apartment 33 aims to hide these inconsistencies to reorganize and realign the infrastructure of the spaces. It also takes advantage of the existing layouts to cleverly hide certain programs such as; storage, washing areas, bathrooms, and wardrobes.

The 6,000 square feet of the apartment is broken into two floors. The lower level is where the more formal living, dining, and kitchen spaces are located, as well as the primary suite. The curvilinear plaster stair leads to the upper level which has a large living room more geared toward children, 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a small gym space. The large kitchen is clad in stone and includes a built-in breakfast banquette which seats six. The dining area is flanked on one side by an arched stone bar, and the other with a large walnut storage unit. Across from the dining room, the formal living room is organized around a fluted stone mantel with stone shelving. On the opposite end the primary suite with two walk-in closets also contains a fully stone bathroom with walnut vanity and freestanding bathtub. The upstairs living space has its own kitchenette, as well as a built-in window seat that extends into a corner table and shelves
