High Ridge House
RESIDENTIAL #1701 2017
High Ridge House is designed for a couple that often hosts their grown children and extended family, in the rolling farmland of western Illinois. The project looks at a vernacular gable form by arranging it into unique combinations. The volumes are turned to face views, separated to provide light, slid to arrange space, and lifted to provide entry.

GALENA, IL
The site sensitive materials are not only meant to fit appropriately within the natural site, but also reinforce the pure geometries of the gable volumes. Grey cedar shingles wrap the exterior walls and roofs, and notch around stone foundation walls providing openings for expansive views of the landscape. The gable roofs take cues from nearby agricultural buildings, as well as mitigate the large amounts of snowfall each winter. Glazing is used minimally and strategically (less than 8% of the total enclosure) to provide both access to views and light, but also to more efficiently control interior temperature.
