House 1114
RESIDENTIAL #2006 2023
House 1114 in Bozeman, Montana is a new addition, garage, and full gut renovation of a 2,800 sqft house. The back half of the original house was removed and replaced with a more usable and open living and dining room. The existing garage was demolished and relocated to the alley, allowing for a more open and welcoming entry to the main house.
The material and formal direction for the project avoids the use of typical punched openings. Seven-foot-tall windows and doors extend from the floor to a datum line which is further emphasized by a change in exterior siding. Not only does this provide the main living space with an abundance of natural light, it organizes the volume giving it an abstract reading of a simple form perched atop a series of wooden walls.

For the complete renovation of the interior of the original house, the kitchen was reconfigured to be more usable and provide space to gather comfortably around a large kitchen island. A new mudroom, laundry room, bedroom, and secondary den were added to accommodate the daily needs of a family of five. In addition to these spaces, a private bathroom was added to create a more traditional primary suite. The new layout is more functional and provides a lot more space for the family to host guests or entertain. As a bonus, the new floor plan allocates kids spaces to the lower-level of the house, with more formal parent spaces located on the main floor.
